Flooring Calculator
Find out how many boxes of laminate, vinyl or hardwood flooring your room needs — waste included.

Flooring is sold by the box, and every product covers a different area — so a generic “square footage” number is not enough. This calculator turns your room size into the actual number of boxes to buy.
Enter your room dimensions and the coverage printed on the flooring box, choose a waste allowance for cuts, and you will get the exact box count, plus how much total floor you will have bought.
How to use the Flooring Calculator
- Measure the length and width of the room.
- Find the “coverage per box” on the flooring packaging and enter it.
- Choose a waste allowance — 10% is standard, more for diagonal layouts.
- Read off the number of boxes to buy.
Frequently asked questions
How much flooring waste should I allow?
Plan for about 10% extra on a standard rectangular room. Use 5% for a large, simple space and up to 15% for diagonal installations or rooms with many corners, closets and cuts.
Why does coverage per box matter so much?
Laminate, vinyl plank and hardwood boxes range widely — anywhere from about 16 to 30 sq ft per box. Using the exact figure from your product is the difference between buying the right amount and being one box short.
Should I keep leftover flooring?
Yes. Keep at least a few unopened planks. Flooring lines are frequently discontinued, and a future repair will be invisible if you have matching boards from the same batch.
Do I need underlayment too?
Most floating floors (laminate and many vinyl planks) need underlayment unless it is pre-attached. It is sold by the area, so use your floor area (without the waste percentage) to size it.
