Sod Calculator
Find out how much sod to order for a new lawn — area, rolls and pallets, waste included.
Last reviewed 2026-06-06
New sod gives an instant lawn, but it is perishable and sold in fixed roll or pallet sizes — so ordering the right amount matters. Too little and you have bare strips; too much and pallets go to waste because sod cannot be kept.
Enter the length and width of the area and a waste allowance for cuts and shaping. We return the total area to order plus the rough number of rolls and pallets.
How to use the Sod Calculator
- Measure the length and width of the lawn area (split odd shapes into rectangles and add them).
- Pick a waste allowance — 5% for a simple rectangle, more for curves and cuts.
- Read the total area, then the rolls/pallets to order.
- Confirm roll and pallet sizes with your turf supplier, as they vary.
Frequently asked questions
How much sod do I need?
Measure the area (length × width), then add about 5–10% for cuts and shaping around beds and paths. Order that total area; divide by your supplier’s roll or pallet size to get the count.
How many square feet is a pallet of sod?
A pallet commonly covers about 450 square feet (50 square yards), though this varies by region and supplier from roughly 400 to 500 sq ft. Always confirm before ordering.
How much waste should I allow for sod?
About 5% for a straightforward rectangular lawn, and 10–15% if you have curves, garden beds, or lots of cuts to fit around. The trimmed pieces fill in edges and corners.
Can I order sod in advance?
No — sod is living grass and should be laid within about 24 hours of delivery. Order it only when your soil is prepared and you are ready to lay it the same day.
